JIVING WITH THE JESTER

Jiving With The Jester was originally written as a classical guitar style piece but, as I played it more and more, and introduced a little swing, it turned into a ragtime tune! The monotonic bass adds to the roots flavour, while the mix of styles here is really the trick of contemporary fingerstyle as played by the likes of John Renbourne and Tommy Emmanuel etc. The opening bar moves from G to G7 and then uses a topline melody to imply D before returning to G. It's also possible to dampen the bass slightly to maintain the roots feel. The Coda Bb/F to Gsus2 requires a firm grip on the barre shape, which moves up from the 1st position to 3rd, but otherwise it's a fun a straight forward piece to play. Big Bill Broonzy meets Purcell!
